The seniors’ summer season at Derllys Court started with the Captain’s handover and an 18 hole stableford competition where players could double up on par three holes.
This season there will be more prizes at stake as the seniors move to a three-division handicap format and in the lowest division, three players tied on 48 points, with Graham Owens taking the top spot on countback from Paul Gibbs with Nick Argue having to settle for third. In division 2, Chris Palmer comfortably took first place with 47 points with Dave Wood three points behind in second. The third division also saw three players tied on 48 points, with Chris Evans, Rob Lewis and Elwyn Roderick finishing in that order.
There was also a string of ”twos” as Owens, Nick Argue, Roger Horsfall, Martin Davies, Paul Gibbs, Huw Hafod Jones and Winston John all benefitted on the 2nd and 5th holes.
The opening week finished with Phil Jones handing over the Captaincy to Tony Wood, with Hugh Thomas coming in as the new vice-Captain. As one of the final acts of his year, Jones was delighted to pass a cheque for £2100 to Ken Jones from the West Wales Prostate Cancer Support Group, ( See Notice Board Page) reflecting the commitment of the seniors to raise funds for a such an appropriate and worthwhile local charity.
When added to the £9400 collected jointly by the Club’s Mens and Ladies sections, on behalf of the Carmarthen Oncology Department and Brain Tumour respectively, the Club can be pleased with it’s fund-raising efforts for the past 12 months which has seen the sum of £11,500 in total raised for local Charities.
