The fight for the Seniors’ Championship 2017
The 36 hole seniors’ championship took centre stage at Derllys Court last week with the President’s Cup for the lowest gross score and the Captain’s Trophy for the best net score up for grabs.
There was an exciting conclusion to the main event with the section’s lowest handicappers, Dai Linquist, Graham Owens and John Hartley competing for the title and separated by only two strokes after the first 18 holes. With the course playing really long after heavy dew and much rain, in conditions more like Autumn than mid-Summer, Tony Wood and Colin Walters were also in contention after two great rounds of golf saw them just a few strokes further back.
As the second round drew to its conclusion, Wood and Walters posted two more good scores in the low eighties, and were also joined on the day by Paul Gibbs and Phil Jones.
As the three leaders completed their rounds, it seemed that the tricky 475 yd par 5 hole was proving to be a problem, with Hartley the first to suffer as he recorded a very uncharacteristic score of nine, to finish with a 36 hole score of 160. Owens completed his round without further problems but was disappointed with his scores of 79 and 77, feeling this wouldn’t be enough to take the title. However, with Linquist also struggling on the 15th, with a seven, and finally carding a 78, Owens discovered to his delight that he had won the Championship by just a single stroke.
[President’s Cup scores: 1st Owens (79+77), 2nd Linquist (79+78), 3rd Hartley (81+79).]
In the Captain’s Trophy, after round one, Tony Woods was three strokes clear of Phil Jones with this year’s surprise contender, 27 handicapper Brian Newcombe excelling with a net 70 over the first 18 holes.
As other contenders faded in round two, these three continued with their good scoring. Wood’s and Jones both had identical scores after the first nine holes, until Wood’s run of pars and a birdie pushed him clear of Jones to eventually take the title by two strokes, with Newcombe deservedly finishing in third place.
[Captain’s Trophy scores: 1st Wood (68+67), 2nd Jones (71+66), Newcombe (70+69).]
