Newsletter March 2010
Posted on : Sunday, March 21st, 2010
First of all, a warm welcome for the 2010 season. The club has increased its membership and a more comprehensive programme has been arranged. As the new season is almost upon us, members will be interested in being made aware of the events that occurred towards the end of the previous golfing year as well as some of the details of the forthcoming programme.
Date for the diary
Captain’s Changeover Day – 4th April (Easter Sunday)
New season’s Captains are: Richard Thomas (Club), Eirian Davies (Ladies), Reg Powell (Seniors), Thomas Boucher (1st Captain for the junior section).
It is hoped that a large number of members will enter the Texas Scramble competition, which will be followed by a buffet and presentations, with the retiring Captains giving their reports and members introduced to their new officers.
Mail Golf Foursomes
Men Martin Thomas & Keith Williams will play in round 2 against a pair yet to be announced.
Ladies Judith Stevens & Ann Thomas are to play South Pembs at Derllys, Saturday 6th March.
Team Men Derllys are to play at home against Trefloyne in round 2.
Ladies Played away to Ashburnham and acquitted themselves in a convincing manner but narrowly missed out on a victory.
Rules quiz evening
A well attended Rules of Golf quiz night was held at the club in January. This is the 2nd year that Mr Jeff Harries (a prominent member of the Welsh Golfing Union) has been in charge of the event and it is obvious members greatly appreciate the opportunity to learn from him the finer points of golf. The winning team were Stephanie Stankevitch, Jon Hartley and Dafydd Vaughan. Money raised during the evening has been donated to the junior section. Thomas Boucher responded and thanked members for their generosity.
3 Club Competition
As a taster for the new season a 9 hole competition was held on Friday 26th February. With a strong wind blowing, many of the competitors had to make a last minute change to their club selection. Nearest to the pin went to Gerald Evans. The runner up on countback with 20 points was Paul Williams and overall winner Ben Creamer.
Open days
Open days in other clubs will be held throughout the summer. All members with active handicaps are eligible to play. More information can be found in the clubhouse.
Dyfed League
Congratulations to the Derllys team on their promotion to Division 3. League Captain Lee Lewis invites interested members (18 handicap or lower) to come along on Sunday 28th March to participate in an 18 hole competition with the view to establishing a good player quality base for the team. Opponents this year are: Carmarthen, Priskilly, Aberystwyth, Trefloyne and Cardigan. We wish the team every success.
County Cards will be available for purchase at the beginning of April. This entitles holders to play in a large number of Welsh clubs at a greatly reduced rate.
Knockout Cup Competitions
Lists are now being displayed for the singles (won last year by Ryan Burt) and pairs (won last year by Richard Davies & Huw Powell). Would all competitors please append names at your earliest convenience. Closing date Sunday 28th March.
Ladies
Summer league commences Tuesday 6th April; all lady members are welcome to participate. Friendly fixtures have now been added to the 2010 programme with opponents such as Trefloyne & Glyn Abbey.
The first Derllys Ladies Open Day will be held on Friday 25th June.
Juniors
Ben Creamer junior organiser will be available to discuss with juniors/parents wishing to take part in the many interesting activities of this important section. We would like to thank Chris Duxberry for his continued support of the juniors.
Seniors
All those interested are asked to ascertain details from the notice board or contact Reg Powell, this year’s Captain.
Coaching
Commencing this spring, courses of 6 group lessons free for beginner ladies, junior girls and for the first time, retired gentlemen. See clubhouse posters for further details. Group and individual coaching available throughout the season with Robert Ryder (07771 902604).
Tribute
It is with sadness that we report the death of J Leslie Jones (Les), a founder member of the club who passed away in January aged 78. Les was a familiar face in the club and was highly respected by everyone who knew him. He was a keen sportsman who excelled at both rugby and cricket prior to taking up golf almost 50 years ago. Many members will remember him for his genuine interest in their progress on the golf course. The large number of friends and golfers who attended his funeral service in Parc Gwyn Crematorium was testimony to his popularity. He will be greatly missed. The HD Unit at Glangwili Hospital received a generous collection of £185 from Derllys members in Les’s memory. A commerative competition will be held in his memory during the month of August.
Are you a left handed golfer??
Test your golf against the right handed players in an annual competition to be held in July. See notice board for further information.
