Robertson & Horsfall battle it out for wildcard honours.

When the seniors met for their second event of the year, a wild-card stableford where points could be doubled on four nominated holes and with full sets of clubs back in their bags, last week’s winner Meirion Evans could only managed 3^rd place overall, but still claimed the best score on the back nine holes.

A great contest between Ian Robertson and Roger Horsfall saw them both score well on their wildcard holes, with 16 and 20 points respectively. However, Robertson’s birdie three on the final hole was just enough to reward him with the narrowest of victories, with 51 points to Horsfall’s 50.

The best front nine holes went to new vice-captain Chris Palmer, who birdied both the 5^th and 6^th holes to reach the half-way point with 27 points, but he could only add a further 19 on the remaining holes.

With several different players coming into form, the final three rounds of the winter eclectic should prove fascinating when it resumes in a few weeks time (February 20th).

New captain reigns supreme in Three Club event

Newly elected seniors Captain Meirion Evans continued his good winter form by making light work of only being allowed three golf clubs, to record 38 stableford points and take 1^st place in the recent Derllys Court seniors “Three Club” event.

Although some way behind, there was a close fight for the remaining prizes with Roy Gallop claiming 2^nd place overall with 34 points on countback from Winston John.

John Llewellyn played the front nine holes superbly to record 22 points, including the only 2 of the day, on the 5^th hole, but had a disappointing final nine holes. Frank Simmons claimed the final prize with a solid 18 points on the back nine, just pipping Derek Davies on countback.

This is a normal 18 hole stableford competition but competitors are only allowed to carry THREE clubs in their bag – plus a putter!
NB You are NOT allowed to replace your putter with an extra (ie 4^th)club.

Christmas competition washed-out but not the whole season!

The heavens opened and the ensuing torrential rain put paid to any hope that the Derllys Court seniors had of playing their final tournament of 2011 last week.

Not downhearted, the 40 or so seniors hoping to play, found alternative entertainment for a few hours until it was time for the ever popular and much appreciated Christmas dinner!

After a splendid meal and appropriate liquid refreshment, the seniors AGM took place, and everyone present acknowledged the huge strides made this season with the development of a very full and varied competition programme.

Outgoing Captain Reg Powell commented on the team matches played, and on behalf of all the senior members, Vice-captain Phil Rogers thanked Robert, Meinir and Rhian Walters for all their hard work, both on the course and inside the Clubhouse.

Treasurer Clive Jones summarised the sound financial progress made this year and Competitions Secretary Roy Gallop commented on the range of events that had been held. With more than 40 events taking place during the 26 week summer season, he thanked the members for their overwhelming support and highlighted in particular, the success of the 12 week Dawn Patrol League.

With the seniors playing over 700 rounds of golf during the summer, he also acknowledged the role played by Ken Morris in preparing and checking the majority of those cards, thus ensuring the smooth running of the competitions.

Phil Rogers, who also chaired the meeting, reinforced Ken’s contribution by inviting him to accept the position of Honorary Seniors Vice- President, and then outlined proposals to amend the structure of the committee for next year, before electing the new Captain and Vice-captain for 2012.

He finally announced that the honour of becoming the seniors first Clubman of the Year would be awarded to Roy Gallop for all his hard work in setting up this year’s programme of events.
