Please try to arrive at least 15 minutes before your tee-off time to ensure that all matches keep to the appointed times.

Members are reminded that once you have put your name down to play in a competition, it is not acceptable to fail to turn up to play at the tee-time allocated. In the event of someone not turning up without prior notification, the normal Club policy will be followed.

Hardy seniors battle the elements!

The cold, wet and windy weather continued at Derllys Court last week as a field of 29 hardy seniors battled the elements in the first strokeplay medal of the summer season. The conditions got the better of the majority of the competitors as some uncharacteristic high scores were returned, but it was a tribute to the players that all cards were returned, with all holes completed!
A hard-earned gross score of 82 was good enough to earn first place in Division 1 for eight-handicapper John Hartley, with Peter Jones taking the winning spot in Division 2 with a gross 92.
The competition for the prizes for best net was much more hotly contested with Bryan Newcombe, playing off 26, claiming the overall prize with an excellent net 72, whilst Jeff Thomas beat Wynne Evans on countback to take 2^nd place just one shot back, with five other players returning a net 74.
The ever consistent Roger Horsfall won the prize for the best “veterans” score with a net 75, disappointing Barry Woodford, whose score of 74 wasn’t quite good enough due to the fact that his 70^th birthday is still a few months away! Maybe next time Barry!!
The shot of the day came from another veteran, 23-handicapper Frank Wride on the 237 yard, par 3, 17^th hole earning him a very rare “2” on one of the most challenging holes.
The seniors will be hoping for a return to spring weather this week as the first of the 12 round Dawn Patrol league competition begins.

Disappointing finish to busy week for seniors

The seniors at Derllys Court experienced mixed fortunes and mixed conditions last week.

Monday saw a good field of 39 members contesting a stableford competition in pleasant spring weather.
In another very close contest, there was a first victory for Huw Jones after an excellent round of golf earned him 41 points, pushing Roy Gallop into 2^nd place, just one point behind. Dave Newman and Peter Jones shared 3^rd spot scoring 39 points, with Phil Jones and Chris Cousins on 38, and three other players on 37 points. With five players also scoring 2s on the par threes, there were plenty of smiling faces after a very enjoyable competition.
Three days later, the sudden reversal back to wintry weather saw the short sleeved shirts replaced by several layers of warm clothes, with full waterproofs on top for the first visit of the seniors team from Priskilly.
Captain Meirion Evans was delighted to see his team showing excellent all round form to earn a convincing 6½-1½ win, leading the way with his partner Phil Rogers to record a 5&4 victory, and will no doubt have noted that the new pairing of Jeff Thomas & Brian Newcombe excelled with an 8&7 win. Priskilly took the defeat in good spirits and are eager to turn the tables when they are the hosts later in the year.
The next day, the week came to a disappointing end with a very narrow defeat for the team in their first venture into the Seniors Classic.
John Hartley & Frank Simmons gave Derllys an early lead, winning a hard-fought game by 2&1, but then watched the pairing of Chris Palmer & Roger Horsfall go down by the same margin. The final pair of Roy Gallop & Les Burgoyne were all square going to the final hole, after a match that had been nip and tuck from the first. Unfortunately, both players hit poor tee shots that opened the door for the visitors from Mountain Ash to clinch the match with the final putt on the 18^th green.

Cilgwyn prove too strong for first match of 2012 season.

Challenging start to 2012 for seniors team.

With no seniors competition last week at Derllys Court, captain Meirion Evans took his team to Cilgwyn for the first team match of the 2012 season.

Conditions were made difficult by the 30mm of rain that had fallen in the previous 24 hours, but it failed to dampen the warm welcome from the hosts or the visitors determination to improve on last year’s defeats.

Unfortunately, once again, the home team got the better of several close matches, typified by the captain and Phil Rogers’s 18^th hole defeat. Two other matches were decided on the 17^th hole, and it was left to last year’s most successful pairing of new vice-captain Chris Palmer & Peter Jones to lead the way with a hard fought 2&1 victory.

Dave Newman & Wynne Evans starred for the visitors, winning 5&4, and the pairing of Roy Gallop & Barry Woodford overcame a 3 hole deficit at the turn to record a 2&1 win for the visitors, but although the team performance had clearly improved, the final result was similar to last year.

The seniors now have a busy week ahead with a seniors competition on Monday of this week, and then welcome new opponents Priskilly to Derllys Court on Thursday. The following day the seniors encounter a new experience by playing Mountain Ash in the first round of the South Wales Seniors Classic.

This competition was a NON – QUALIFYING event (ie no-handicap changes).

The event originally planned for this day was a non-qualifying yellowball stableford team event. The decision to replace it with a normal individual stableford competition was made on Sunday afternoon due to a number of circumstances and it was decided to retain the event as a non-qualifying event due to the late notification of the re-arrangement.The Club secretary (Rhian Walters) and seniors secretary (Phil Rogers) were advised PRIOR to the event taking place!
