Eclectic table shaken up after Round Two.
There was a shake-up in the seniors’ eclectic competition last week at Derllys Court when Graham Parry and Wayne Causon shared the top position in Round Two with solid rounds of golf that saw them finish tied on 40 stableford points.
In damp conditions with less pace on the course, higher handicappers Phil Rogers and Tom Thomas did well to claim third and fourth places with scores of 38 and 37 points respectively. The next six places all went to lower handicap players with Graham Owens (37 pts), Roddy Thomas, Colin Jones, Nick Argue and Huw Hafod Jones (all 36 pts), and John Hartley (35 pts) making up the best ten scores.
In the early stages of the competition, lower handicappers usually head the table, and after Round Two eight-handicap Hartley narrowly retains first place by one stroke from four-handicap Jones. Parry and Owens move into third and fourth place with Owens moving up forty places in the table after only playing nine holes in Round One. Despite a disappointing Round Two, Les Burgoyne still improved by nine stokes to hold on to fifth place with Causon also making a big move of eleven places up to ninth.
Further changes will be guaranteed when Round Three takes place next week.

Webb wins Round One.
After a frost-delayed start at Derllys Court last week, the first round of the seniors’ Winter Eclectic league was played in bright sunny weather with the course still in great condition. Although good scores were anticipated, it proved to be a tight contest with 39 points from Peter Webb good enough to take first place from Les Burgoyne in second, with John Hartley claiming the first place in division one, and third overall, both players recording 37 points.
Behind them, four players were tied on 36 points with Chris Cousins enjoying his return to seniors’ golf after a few years away and seeing his 21 points take the prize for the best back nine score in division two. On the same score, Nick Argue showed that his recent hip operation had not unduly hampered his scoring ability to take runner-up spot in division one, on countback from Jeff Thomas and Roy Gallop who took the next two places on the same score.
Lower down the table, Chris Evans’s 19 points was the best front nine score in division two, and Ian Watson’s 18 points won the best back nine score in the higher division. Although playing only nine holes in round one, Graham Owens recorded the top score in the same division on the front nine, and his 20 points and seven pars sets him up nicely for a good eclectic score in the remaining rounds.
To complete the prize-winners, the Treasurer had the dubious pleasure of paying out to an unprecedented eleven players who recorded “twos” on either the 2nd or 5th holes.
Hartley takes an early lead in the eclectic table from Jeff Thomas and Colin Jones with Burgoyne, Webb and Argue occupying the next three spots. With a close final result always guaranteed in this competition, there will be many changes before the overall winner is decided after the final round in March 2019.

Season-end Grand Finale.
The final two competitions of the summer season were played recently at Derllys Court with the penultimate event seeing a dominant team of Colin Jones, Ian Watson and Barry Davies comfortably taking first place in a team stableford. Their 113 points was a clear 10 points ahead of second placed Phil Mountjoy, Dave Wood and K Huw L Jones, with Hugh Thomas, Elwyn Roderick and Richard Lord in third.
The final event saw the traditional Charity Challenge Match between two teams of 24 players, selected at random by the Captain Phil Jones and vice-Captain Tony Wood.
Playing a Ryder Cup style competition, the teams were selected in pairs to play better-ball matches on the front nine and singles on the back nine, with one point available for each match won, and half a point for a tie.
With the Captain leading the way in the first match, Jones set the tone for the day when he and partner Chris Evans recorded a comfortable victory over Wood and Idwal Thomas to give his team an early two points to one lead. Further convincing wins for Paul Gibbs and Ninian Davies (3-0) and David Rogers and Barry Davies (3-0) increased the Captain’s lead and were only partly offset by a 3-0 win for Wood’s team from Geraint Roberts and Julian Bowen.
Despite numerous very close matches being decided on the final few holes, the solid play of more of the Captain’s pairings contributed to a very convincing final score of 21 points to 14, in favour of the Captain.
After a splendid buffet lunch, and the presentation of a bottle of wine to each of the winners, the summer season concluded with the generosity of the members boosting the Charity funds being raised in aid of Prostate Cancer towards £2000 for this year.
The members now have a break for a couple of weeks before the start of the six round Winter Eclectic Competition.

The seniors at Derllys Court returned to league action last week with the penultimate round of the Dawn Patrol league being played. With a great score of 43 points, in-form John Phillips became the ninth different member to take first place, two points clear of second placed John Hartley who had to settle for the best score from the lower handicappers in division one. Nicky Goldsmith’s 39 points took the next place in the same group on countback from Alan Hire, Phil Mountjoy and Hugh Thomas, with Julian Bowen’s 38 points good enough to take the second spot in division two.
After another steady round, Huw Hafod Jones has made a significant move up the league table to take second place on 46 points just two behind Denzil Howells who has been amongst the top three since the second round. Frank Wride, after a disappointing round nine, slips to third place, but with the top six players separated by only five points, this year’s winner won’t be decided until the final round..

Yellow peril strikes again!
The seniors at Derllys Court played a Yellowball competition last week in teams of three with players alternating to play the yellowball on successive holes. The player with the yellowball has the opportunity to double the number of stableford points scored on that hole but losing the ball means that no more double points can be scored.
Despite some players finding the scoring system rather challenging, an enjoyable contest saw the trio of Dave Gladwin, K Huw L Jones and Geraint Roberts take first place with a comfortable eight point lead over the second placed team of Colin Jones, Ian Robertson and Barry Davies.

Owens and Clark triumph in seniors’ championship.
The 36 hole Seniors’ Championship took centre stage at Derllys Court last week, and the first round was lit up by a sparkling round of golf from 29 handicapper Richard Clark.
By keeping the ball in play and scoring consistently, Clark produced an excellent 18 holes to record a gross score of 90, net 61, to lead the competition for the best net score by the small margin of three strokes from Tony Wood and Huw Hafod Jones.
In the gross section of the event, Wood and Colin Walters, helped by an eagle two at the 18th, both scored 78, leading the favoured lower handicappers Graham Owens and John Hartley by two strokes. Owens and Hartley shared third place with Ken Breaker, in his first season with the club, with Hafod Jones and Roger Horsfall in close pursuit.
With the fine weather continuing for the 2nd round, scoring was expected to be as good as round one, but despite the perfect conditions, most of the 24 competitors struggled somewhere on the course.
One particular three-ball thrived as Idwal Thomas, Dave Wood and Roy Gallop, took three of the top four spots in the net event, with Thomas recording 67 and Wood and Gallop scoring 68. They were joined by Clark who once again produced a good net score of 68 to total 129, and take the Captain’s Trophy for the best 36 hole net score. There was a close contest for second place overall with Gallop (68+68), getting the nod on countback from both Les Burgoyne (67+69) and Hafod Jones (64+72).
The fight for the President’s Cup also went to the final few holes. With Wood, Walters and Breaker all failing to repeat their performances from two days earlier, the door was opened for Owens and Hartley.
A tremendous gross score of 77 from Owens bettered Hartley’s score by two strokes, and when the two rounds were combined it confirmed that Owens had retained the Cup with a total of 157 strokes, just one stroke more than his 2017 winning score.

Wride rises to top of Dawn Patrol league table and Clark beats Pickersgill to awayday trophy.
With the dry weather continuing, the higher handicappers once again made the most of the running fairways and receptive greens when the seniors at Derllys Court played the eighth round of the Dawn Patrol league.
In first place with 43 points, twenty-three handicapper Tom Thomas carded five pars on his back nine holes for 24 points to add to the 19 points from the front nine. In an equally impressive round, Phil Pickersgill, playing off seven, sank two birdies on the back nine holes for a one under par score, to total 40 points and claim second place overall.
In division two, also on 40 points, Brian Newcombe had a solid round, beating Elwyn Roderick, Frank Wride, Graham Bebb and Phil Mountjoy by one point, with Bebb claiming second place in division one from Mountjoy on countback.
With 8 of the 10 rounds now completed, Wride regains top spot on 45 league points with Denzil Howells (44) and Nick Argue (43) in close contention. Not far behind, Huw Hafod Jones (41) and Phil Rogers, Jeff Thomas and Colin Walters (all 39) all need good finishes in the final two rounds to overtake the current leaders.
Pickersgill also featured in a great contest for the Away Day Shield last week as the seniors decamped to Fairwood Park for a day’s golf. Playing in the same group, Pickersgill and Richard Clark competed in a matchplay situation with Clark using the course knowledge gained from a few years membership at the unfamiliar course to his advantage. Neck and neck for 17 holes, a net birdie at the last saw Clark finish on 40 points to take this year’s title by just one point with 40 points overall, demoting Pickersgill into second place.
Also scoring well and finishing on 38 points, Barry Davies and Nick Argue took the next two prizes with John Llewellyn taking second place in division two. Graham Owens and seniors’ President Rob Walters claimed awards for nearest the pin on two of the par three holes.

Hugh Thomas leads his team to Texas Scramble glory!
The seniors at Derllys Court took a short break from the summer league competition and played in a Texas scramble last week.
In the good conditions there were birdie opportunities a plenty, but many groups found it difficult to find the bottom of the cup. There were no such problems for the winning trio however, with four birdies and just one bogey on the daunting par four 9th hole earning Hugh Thomas, Ian Robertson and new seniors member Chris Dzioba the top prize with a great net score of 60.8. With a very similar pattern of scoring, Roy Gallop, Dave Wood and Wynne Evans took second place, after just three birdies and one bogey on the same hole as the winners, resulted in a net score of 61.9.
Huw Hafod Jones, Geraint Roberts and Wyn M Evans claimed third spot with 62.8, with Graham Bebb, Richard Lord and David Rogers tied with Graham Owens, Rob Lewis and Barry Davies just 0.2 behind on 63.0.

Round seven of summer league sees a shake up at the top.
The seventh round of the Dawn Patrol league at Derllys Court  saw more good scoring as the fine weather continued, and once again another new winner took the top prize.
For the fourth successive round, it took 45 points to claim first place, and on this occasion it went to Alan Hire thanks largely to a tremendous 24 points on the back nine holes. Rob Lewis repeated his score from last week of 43 points to take second place whilst a resurgent John Hartley shot a gross 3over par round to take third place on 42, with Ian Watson, Michael Thomas, John Llewellyn and Mike Benbow all tied on 41 points. Colin Walters and Ken Breaker shared 40 points, with five other players tied on 39 points.
Denzil Howells retains his lead at the top of the league table with 43 points, with Nick Argue moving into second on 40, closely followed by Phil Rogers (38), Frank Wride (37) and Jeff Thomas and Huw Hafod Jones both just one point back. Howells also leads the battle amongst the higher handicappers for the 20-20 title, eight points ahead of Rogers with Dave Wood, Wride and Wynne Evans all in close contention.

Dawn Patrol title still wide open after after six rounds.
Parched fairways and receptive verdant greens ensured good scoring opportunities in the 6th round of the Dawn Patrol league.
Once again the higher handicappers made hay as the sun shone, with 28 handicapper Winston John making the most of the day with a tremendous score of 45 points to take first place. Four gross pars helped John to 22 points on the front nine, and more consistent play on the back nine added another 23 points.
Two strokes behind, Huw Hafod Jones took second place on countback from Wyn M Evans and Rob Lewis, with Denzil Howells, Ken Breaker and Wynne Evans also tied for the next three places on 42 points. More good golf saw Nick Argue, Dave Gladwin and Mike Benbow all recording 41 points with K Huw L Jones and Brian Newcombe both on 40 pts. Nine more players on a score of 38 or 39 confirmed that the course was playing much shorter than usual, with greens that were a delight to putt on.
Howells and Frank Wride still retain the top two spots in the league table with 40 and 37 points respectively. Close behind, Argue and Jeff Thomas are now on 35 points, Phil Rogers on 33 and Nicky Goldsmith and Huw Hafod on 31. With round 7 being played this week, this year’s competition is still wide open.

Argue and Thomas shake up Dawn Patrol league.
The seniors at Derllys Court reached the half-way stage of their main summer competition last week when the 5th round of the Dawn Patrol league was played.
In hot and very dry conditions, two division one players excelled with Nick Argue becoming the fifth different player to win a round when he shot a tremendous 45 stableford points. Three birdies from Argue, including the 18th hole bettered Jeff Thomas’s two birdies in an equally good round, and helped Argue claim first place on countback. The next six places were claimed by division two handicappers with Dave Wood taking third overall with 41 points, followed by Denzil Howells and Frank Wride (40) and Martin Davies, Tom Thomas and K Huw L Jones all one stroke back.
The results shook up the Dawn Patrol league table which now sees six players just one point apart with Frank Wride at the top on 33 points followed by Howells, Thomas, Nicky Goldsmith, Phil Rogers and Argue. In the 20-20 league section for higher handicappers, Howells and Wride now share top spot, with Rogers dropping to third and Wood rising to fourth.

Bebby’s week to remember!!
In a busy and successful week for the seniors at Derllys Court, Graham Bebb had a golfing week to remember. The first strokeplay medal of the season saw an excellent round of golf from Bebb take first place in the net competition. Five pars in the first six holes set Bebb up nicely for a good round, and with three more pars on the back nine and a birdie on the last hole, his score of gross 79, net 61 saw him take first place by a clear five strokes.
The remaining players were tightly packed as Jeff Thomas, Phil Mountjoy and Hugh Thomas all recorded net scores of 66, with Ian Watson, Chris Evans and Dave Gladwin just one stroke behind.
A day earlier, Bebb had been a key player in the “B” team’s victory against Pontardawe in the south wales seniors’ classic Bowl competition. Playing with Mountjoy, the pair secured a comprehensive 6&4 win for the team, before further victories for captain Phil Jones and Tony Wood (5&4) and Chris Palmer and Colin Walters (3&2) saw the team through to the quarter-finals for the second successive year.
Two days later, Jones took a team to South Pembs for their annual visit. In a very close match where the result was always in the balance, wins for Wood and partner Idwal Thomas (4&3), Mountjoy and Ian Watson (2&1), Roy Gallop and Clive Jones (1up), and a half for Bebb and Ninian Davies proved not to be quite enough to steal a narrow victory, with recent “banker” pairing of Winston John and Richard Clark losing their match on the final hole. Nevertheless, after a splendid day, the captain was reasonably content to come away with a 3½ to 4½ scoreline in the hosts favour.
To complete the week, 2017 pairs knock-out winners Bebb and Dave Wood went into battle against Phil Pickersgill and John Richards aiming to maintain their chances of retaining the title this year. Struggling to find the pace on the greens, the pair found themselves two holes down with just three holes to play. Bebb sunk a good putt to continue on up the 17th and using his strokes well, Wood won the next two holes to take the match to the 19th tee where a par from Bebb was enough to take the pair into the next round.

Outstanding golf all round, but Rogers’ excels.
There were three outstanding rounds of golf last week at Derllys Court in the 4th round of the seniors’ Dawn Patrol league. Early starter Nicky Goldsmith set the tone for a high-scoring event with a great card worth 45 stableford points and looked to be sitting comfortably in first place. Huw Hafod Jones appeared to be his nearest challenger with 39 points until later starter Peter Jones entered the clubhouse with a score of 44 points.
However, this was surpassed by one of the final cards of the round when 23 handicapper Phil Rogers recorded eight pars in his 45 points, to claim first place on countback. Dave Gladwin, David Rogers, Roy Gallop and Wayne Causon shared fifth place on 38 points with fifteen other players within three strokes.
Rogers’ win takes him to the top of both the Dawn Patrol league table on 28 points with Goldsmith now second on 25 points, and the 20-20 table where Rogers is just 3 points ahead of Goldsmith. Goldsmith’s handicap reduction now promotes him into the division one handicap section, whilst Rogers will face a real challenge to repeat his excellent performance after a 3 stroke reduction in his own handicap.

Tuesday 29th May 2018 – results seniors’ Pairs Greensomes
There was some excellent scoring last week at Derllys Court when the seniors played a Greensomes pairs competition. At the top of the leader board, Graham Bebb and Dave Wood showed the sort of form that saw them win the pairs knock-out competition last year, with both players contributing to a great score of 42 stableford points. The pair hope that they will be able to reproduce their good form when they represent the club in the Welsh Championships at Denbigh later in the year.

In a very tight contest, Colin Jones and Huw Hafod Jones were just one point back, with Clive Jones and Winston John’s 40 points taking third place on countback from Tom Thomas and John Phillips.

Rogers and Newcombe bring some cheer to the seniors’ disappointing week!
Derllys Court seniors’ Captain Phil Jones took a team to Newport Sands last week to play their first match of the season, and were fortunate to find a rare dry day. With all scheduled home competitions for the seniors at Derllys Court washed out for the whole of April, it was no surprise to find that the lack of game time showed as the visitors struggled to find any rhythm in their play.
Despite a number of very close matches, there were only two victories recorded by the visitors. The highlight of the day saw Brian Newcombe and Phil Rogers making the most of their stroke allowances in their match against Derllys dual member Dai Linquist playing for Newport with partner Morus Rees. Starting from the tenth tee, Newcombe and Rogers found themselves two down after four holes before Newcombe won the 14th, to be followed by successive pars on the two par 3 holes from Rogers which levelled the match. The visitors strong run continued on the 17th and 18th holes, to go two up at the turn. Steady play and another win from par 3 specialist Rogers at the sixth hole was sufficient to hold off a late Linquist fight back to take the match 3 & 1.
The second win saw Meirion Evans and Hugh Thomas record an impressive and very hard-fought victory over strong opposition in a match that changed hands numerous times before the visitors ran out 2&1 victors. Despite the heavy defeat, Captain Jones thanked the hosts for a very enjoyable day and the great spirit in which the matches were played.
In this year’s South Wales Classic, both the A and B teams will now be looking to the Bowl competition for success after both teams suffered heavy defeats in the preliminary round matches. The B team faced a very tough challenge at Pennard and despite several good performances, the lack of course knowledge in particular took its toll as the home team ran out convincing 3-0 winners. There was a similar outcome to the A team’s home tie against local rivals Carmarthen last week. Despite two of the three matches remaining competitive until the final few holes, Carmarthen’s more consistent play earned them a deserved and comfortable victory.

Knock Outs.
The deadline for completing first round Singles matches has been extended by 2 weeks to 27th May, but try not to delay any longer, play as soon as you can.

During a very brief respite from the wet weather – one dry sunny day – the seniors witnessed a very tense finish to this season’s winter eclectic amidst much speculation over whether Phil Rogers would hold onto the narrowest of leads and ruin Hugh Hafod Jones’s hopes of retaining the title.
The answer to this question was “Yes”. Rogers’s splendid birdie on the 7th improved his overall eclectic total by one stroke, cancelling out Jones’s par at the 18th. Close contenders Paul Gibbs, John Richards and John Hartley also improved by one stroke with Meirion Evans improving by two, meaning Rogers maintained top spot, for the moment………
However, the status quo was about to be disrupted by a less than fully fit golfer – “I’ve heard that before” you might say – named Chris Palmer whose competitive spirit urged him to put his aches and pains to one side whilst he battled to regain the eclectic title he first won five years ago.
Pars at the 3rd, 7th, 10th and 17th improved his eclectic by four strokes and saw him move into a share of the lead with Rogers, tied on a net score of 61. In accordance with the rules of the competition, exact handicaps replaced playing handicaps and the provisional new calculation of the net scores saw Palmer sneak into first place by just 0.2 of a stroke.
PROVISIONAL Top six places: Chris Palmer (61.0), Phil Rogers (61.2), Huw Hafod Jones (61.5), Paul Gibbs (61.8), John Richards (61.95), Meirion Evans (62.0).

Can “Rocket-Rogers” be caught????
The postponement of the final round of the seniors’ winter eclectic has only served to extend the suspense and drama as members wait for the opportunity to close the gap on current leader Phil Rogers, who rocketed to the top of the leader board at the half-way stage of the six-round competition
With the narrowest of margins – just 0.5 of a stroke – Rogers will be hoping to maintain this winter season’s consistent form and hold off the challenge of those close behind.
His nearest rival, Hugh Hafod Jones will be looking for Rogers to slip up, but may still require that one birdie or par that might allow him to retain the title he won last winter.
Also still very much in contention, the steady Paul Gibbs, and John Richards in his first seniors’ competition, are only one stroke off the lead, with the menacing challenge of John Hartley, Meirion Evans, Chris Palmer and Ninian Davies still in contention but needing something very special – perhaps a “Burgoyne-esque” eagle on the 10th?? – to happen for them to challenge for the top spot.
Nevertheless, with prizes for the top five places, and also best scores on the top and bottom nine, there is still plenty to play for.
With the scores as close as this, Phil Rogers (62), Huw Hafod Jones (62.5), Paul Gibbs & John Richards (63), John Hartley (63.5), Meirion Evans (64), Chris Palmer & Ninian Davies (65), it wouldn’t be a surprise if in the event of a tied final score, countback will need to be used.

Tense finish to winter eclectic guaranteed.
The winter eclectic competition finally got back on schedule when rounds 4 and 5 were played in two consecutive weeks.
In round four, a great round of golf from Chris Palmer saw his 42 stableford points, five points clear of second placed John Hartley, elevate him sixteen places in the eclectic table.
Last week, despite heavy snow showers and freezing conditions, there was a good turnout for round five which was dominated by the higher handicappers in division two. In a tight contest, Rob Lewis (42pts) took first place by one point from Peter Webb with Mike Benbow and Brian Newcombe both on 38pts and Frank Wride with 37pts.
After rocketing to the top of the overall eclectic table at the half-way stage, Phil Rogers’ steady form in rounds 4 and 5 see him maintain a narrow lead in top spot. With the final round scheduled for this week, a tense finish is assured. Rogers’ lead has now been reduced to just 0.5 of a stroke with Huw Hafod Jones looking to retain the title he won last winter. In joint third place, Paul Gibbs and John Richards are a further 0.5 behind, with John Hartley, Meirion Evans, Chris Palmer and Ninian Davies all still in contention.
[Top eclectic scores: Phil Rogers (62), Huw Hafod Jones (62.5), Paul Gibbs & John Richards (63), John Hartley (63.5), Meirion Evans (64), Chris Palmer & Ninian Davies (65)]

Rogers rockets to eclectic Number One spot.
There were some excellent scores at Derllys Court last week when the seniors played the 3rd round of their winter eclectic.
In a tight contest for the top spots, despite failing to score on the 9th hole, Graham Bebb took first place with a great round that included two birdies to record 42 pts and see off the challenge of Phil Rogers by just a single point. Huw Hafod Jones and Roy Gallop tied on 40 pts for third place with Jones getting the nod on countback.
Whilst Bebb, Jones and Gallop took the first three places in division one, there were also good scores from Meirion Evans and Paul Gibbs (both 38pts) with Jeff Thomas, Phil Pickersgill and Les Burgoyne all carding 36pts. Gallop and Evans took prizes for best 9 hole scores on the front and back nine respectively, both with 21 pts.
In division two, Rogers was a clear five points ahead of second placed Alan Hire (36pts) who saw off Brian Newcombe on countback, with Dave Wood and Richard Clark scoring the best nine holes on the front and back nines with 20 pts each.

At the halfway stage of the competition, Rogers sits comfortably at the top of the table with an eclectic net score of 64, and his challengers will have a tough task removing the 24 handicapper from this position with lower handicappers Meirion Evans and John Richards one stroke back, followed by Huw Hafod Jones in close pursuit.

[Eclectic top places: Rogers (64), Evans & Richards (65), Jones (65.5), Ninian Davies (66), Peter Jones (66.5), Hugh Thomas, John Hartley & Phillip Jones (67.5)]

Peter Jones moves to top of eclectic table.
The second round of the seniors’ winter eclectic at Derllys Court last week saw an outstanding round of golf from new competition leader Peter Jones.
In challenging winter conditions Jones’s 42 stableford points was a comfortable three strokes ahead of his fellow competitors despite failing to score at the difficult ninth hole. With eight pars and a birdie at the 4th, the seventeen handicapper not only won the second round convincingly but also moved up to first place in the overall eclectic table.
Previous leader John Hartley remains firmly in contention after another good round of 39 points, rewarding him with second place in last week’s event with Tony Wood (38 pts), Phil Mountjoy (37), Geraint Roberts and Hugh Thomas (both 36) also playing well. Wood’s 21 pts on the front nine holes and Roberts’ 19 pts on the back nine took prizes for the best 9 hole scores from Division One.
In the higher handicap Division Two, Tom Thomas produced his second good round of the competition, with 38 points to take top spot from Davies by just one point with Phil Rogers just one point behind and Alan Hire on 36 pts. Hire’s 22 pts and Rogers’ 19 pts were the best 9 hole scores in this division.

In the eclectic table, Hartley now shares second place behind Jones, alongside Ninian Davies and Meirion Evans. Thomas occupies joint third place alongside Phillip Jones, both joined by Rogers who makes the biggest move up the table after improving by fifteen places.

Hartley takes early lead in the Eclectic.
The seniors at Derllys Court began their winter season last week in ideal conditions with Round 1 of the eclectic. A good turn-out saw some very competitive golf with everyone eager to make a good start in the six-round competition.
Last year’s winner Huw Hafod Jones made a solid start once again with 37 stableford points, and was joined on the same score by John Richards, Roy Gallop and Ninian Davies. However, this score was bettered by five other players, all of whom seem to save their best performances for the eclectic.
First place in Division One, on countback, was secured by Chris Palmer who took the honour from John Hartley  thanks to a back nine of 20 points amongst his total of 38 points. In the same division Meirion Evans was unlucky to miss out on a prize with the same score.
In the higher handicap division, Winston John and Tom Thomas both carded the same score with John taking first place on countback.
Graham Bebb (23 pts) and Michael Thomas (21) recorded the best front nine scores with new member John Richards recording the best back nine score of 22 points along with Ninian Davies (also 22).
In the eclectic table, the lower handicappers lead after just one round, with Hartley in top spot, Richards second, thanks largely to two birdie “2s”, and Phil Pickersgill tied on the same total. Round 2 takes place next week.

10th October 2017 – report seniors’ AwayDay at Tenby
Challenging conditions welcomed the seniors from Derllys Court when they travelled to Tenby for an awayday last week with a strong south-westerly wind blowing across the course.
Most of the visitors found the course and conditions just too difficult, but there were no such troubles for the top two players, Mike Benbow and Jeff Thomas. Making the most of his 23 handicap, despite two no-score holes, Benbow amassed 20 points on the front nine, thanks largely to two 4-point holes, a birdie at the par three 6th hole and a par at the 8th. Added to a solid 16 points on the back nine, Benbow’s score of 36 points pipped Thomas to first place by just one point.
Other highlights saw Phil Rogers eagle the par five 15th, for five stableford points, and further 2’s from Chris Palmer, Graham Owens and Frank Wride. Benbow and Wride secured the nearest the pin prizes, with Palmer, Brian Newcombe, John Rees and Elwyn Roderick taking the team award for the top score with the best two stableford points on each hole.
On a lighter note, during an enjoyable day, the total number of lost balls exceeded the century mark. Howard Thomas’s record of seven “blobs” on the first nine -holes was bettered over 18 holes by Martin Davies, who was never-the-less delighted to receive the Blobby Cup award for his scorecard showing eleven no-score holes!
